A Public Relations and Marketing excerise

A Christmas Tree Festival is a wonderful opportunity for the host organisation as well as groups, charities and businesses who decorate a tree to show the visitors what they have to offer. Being involved is letting people see the group’s or business’ name at least. It shows that they are involved in a local event and support the community effort.

But it can also be so much more depending on the type of Christmas Tree Festival put on and what its aims and objectives are.

Advertising through decorating a Christmas tree

If the Christmas Tree Festival doesn’t have a theme and allows groups to decorate the trees as they like then that could allow for all sorts of advertising whether discreet or blatantly obvious. A hairdresser may decide to decorate a tree with coloured rollers and a variety of hair clips or a carpenter may like to hang a variety of wood on their tree. If advertising is allowed, the name of the carpenter could be burnt on the wood. If a group with a certain coloured logo e.g. red and white for British Heart Foundation they could use red and white decorations to hang on their tree. There might also be the opportunity to leave some leaflets or business cards under a tree for people to take away with them. If this is the case the decorators may have to keep returning to top up the supply of leaflets and business cards or leave a big box full for the organisers to go round and top up. Other freebie goodies could be available for people to help themselves to and these could be very popular so make sure that there is a large enough supply to last the duration of the Christmas Tree Festival.

Warning

Before taking this option it is advisable to check what your Christmas tree decorators are involved with and what they are planning to put on their tree and what they will be giving away underneath. There has been an instance where some freebies were of an adult nature and the local media challenged the organisers who said they were not suitable for children to help themselves to. This story had a lot of publicity focusing on an aspect of the Festival that the organisers hadn’t considered and could have been avoided with careful preparation and planning.

Representatives

If you have a representative from the group or organisation standing near to their Christmas tree they will be able to speak to the visitors about what they do, answer any questions and maybe recruit some help. This is a good chance to highlight some aspect of the group and keep the public informed. Visitors do like to know about the trees and the stories behind some of them.

Networking

By being involved and decorating a tree at the Christmas Tree Festival means that a good number of visitors [often thousands] will see what you have to offer which is very good advertising.
